Why Celebrate?
In the Introduction to Celebrating Manhood: a rite of passage guide, Stacy Farrell emphasizes the importance of celebrating the transition from childhood to manhood. She asks, "How can we help our sons become responsible men of integrity?" I thought she was peering inside my own heart and reading what was written there. As a single mother, raising a boy without much positive input from godly men, I often wonder what impact am I having upon my son. Will he grow to be a man after God's own heart? This guide shows me in simple, easy to follow, step by step directions from a biblical worldview exactly how I can have a positive, lasting, God-centered impact upon my son.
The Guide
The Celebrating Manhood: a rite of passage guide provides everything you need to host your own celebration all in one convenient location. The guide contains a blueprint, which consists of a sample agenda for your son's special night. You can follow it exactly or modify it to meet the needs of your child and guests. While your son is obviously the guest of honor, you will need to invite a few special guests. The guide explains who to consider and what role these men will play in your son's special night. Furthermore, the guide offers a sample invitation. The guide also reminds the mother that her job is to prepare for the celebration, send out the invitations, provide the food, and stay behind the scenes. No hovering allowed! Finally, the guide includes a set of question cards to be used before the end of the evening.
The Question Cards
I can't merely mention the question cards. They need a heading all their own. These cards are brilliant! Each man in attendance will take turns pulling a card from the top of the deck and answering the question it asks. Then, the other men present may answer the question as well. This is where the profound, lifelong impressions and wisdom filled roadmap to manhood begin being built for your son. Helping our sons understand the significance that entering manhood holds for them and encouraging them to embrace their new identities and roles with grace and dignity is important and essential.
Note
I should mention that the digital edition contains quite a few blank pages scattered throughout the various sections. These pages make great places to make notes about who you'd like to invite, what supplies you'll need, and what changes you may want to make.
Final Comments
For this single mom of a child with a diagnosis of Asperger's Syndrome, or high-functioning Autism, I love the concept Stacy Farrell has created in Celebrating Manhood: a rite of passage guide. Two of the things children with a diagnosis of Autism struggle with are social skills and perception. In addition, they have to navigate our chaotic world filled with skewed morals. This Momma prays fervently that her son will grow up to be a man after God's own heart. Helping him embrace his identity as a man of integrity by celebrating his passage into manhood is a great idea. One that I fully embrace. Celebrating Manhood: a rite of passage has certainly been an impetus for inspiration and plans for a celebration in the near future.
