Litfuse Review - The Joy of Letting Go

As the single mother of a child with Autism, I often struggle to find a balance between nurturing and protecting him from the sometimes harsh world we live in and helping him gain the skills, knowledge, abilities, and self-reliance he will need to live an independent adult life. When I was recently granted the privilege of reviewing a copy of The Joy of Letting Go by Vicki Caruana from Publisher David C. Cook, I knew it was a book I had to read.

The Book:

The Joy of Letting Go: Releasing Your Teen into Real Life in the Big World is a 52 day devotional for mothers on releasing your children into the world with grace. We've nurtured them since the day they were born. We've protected them from harm. Our identity is deeply rooted in the title of Mom, Momma, or Mother. When it comes time for them to spread their wings and fly, we can sometimes be hesitant of allowing them the freedom they need to be independent. Raising a child with Autism, I have found myself often wondering what the future will hold. I have felt concern over letting my child out of my sight. What if he doesn't understand something and becomes frustrated? What if he has a meltdown? What if he cant self-regulate? Will the others with him understand or even know how to help him? Letting go can be a real challenge.

In The Joy of Letting Go, Vicki says it best: "On the one hand, we are actively preparing our children for adulthood; on the other, we're holding on to still being needed. It's a tricky balance." Vicki offers a myriad words of wisdom to all moms who are or will soon be learning how to let go. She illustrates her points through anecdotal short-stories. Each devotional starts with a quote from a famous person. It is then followed by the devotional/anecdotal short-story. Next is a section entitled the Thought Poke in which a reflective question is asked. Lastly, a pertinent Bible verse is shared to end that day's devotional. I highly recommend this book to all moms.
